CHANCE: So Daddy, how was your day at work?
RYAN: Well Chance it was pretty boring.
CHANCE: Oh Daddy, I am sorry to hear that. It really can be no fun to have a boring day. That must make you feel very frustrated.
Ryan and I both looked at eachother wondering now who is reading the child behavior book?

Quote of the Day
As I recently posted the Hogan family (Gabriella, Cyndy and Joe) just moved back to California. Moving is a hard concept for Chance to grasp, he keeps asking if Gabriella can meet us at the park, and I have to sadly keep reminding him that she is gone and it could be a loooooong time before we see them again. California is another hard concept to grasp. This funny quote came yesterday after I hung up the phone with Cyndy. Only a child living abroad would probably say this.
Chance: Mom, who were you talking to?
ME: That was Cyndy.
Chance: Cyndy? Where is Cyndy anyway? Texas, Sweden? Where is she?

Dancing Baby Making Me Whine
If I had to give baby boy a song right now, it'd be "You like to move it move it" from the Madagascar movie. The boy likes to move, and I mean, constantly.
I was telling both my mom and Ryan's mom today in an email that such activity causes me to picture my life in about 5 years....it will be me sitting all alone at the dinner table finishing my meal cause my 3 boys can't sit still to save my life. Dinner's already a struggle enough...sit still, use your fork, lean over, SIT DOWN. Meanwhile, Ryan's pretty much done with his meal and is off like a light while I am still sitting with Chance murmuring SIT DOWN. Throw number 3 in to the mix and looks like we've got a dinner party, and I don't mean having guests over.
60 days and counting and my mommy hunch tells me he's going to come early, and probably run around the room several minutes after birth. As I sit here and type I can see out of the corner of my eye, my stomach moving. I can see a knee or elbow stream across my belly making it protrude, and then it rests itself in one place causing a hard spot for several minutes, and then poof, it's gone. He's moved again. Sometimes I wonder if my organs will all stay in tact over the next 2 months of karate camp going on inside my belly.
Nights are the best right now. I have to sleep on my side, so my options for limiting my uncomfortableness are really few. My evenings go something like this as I try to fall asleep at night. Ryan's usually still reading. Start on right side. Crap can't breath, let's try the left. I can breath now, but Oh my lower back is killing me. Prop up a pillow behind me in hopes the lower back will be more supported. Sleeping on the left makes my neck throb, let's try the right again. Right seems to be working until I get a nice taste of throw up in my mouth. I don't want to have to take tums again....I just brushed my teeth and will have to get up and do it again. Man I am thirsty but drinking makes the tums not work. I guess I'll go to the bathroom while I am up brushing my teeth again in hopes I wont have to get up as much at night. Finally lay back down. Ryan is turning off his light. I am trying to regain some level of comfort to try and fall asleep. I lay there pissed off that I can't fall asleep. Meanwhile I can tell Ryan is asleep which pisses me off even more that it took less than 30 seconds for him, and I've been trying for the last thirty minutes. Why didn't I buy one of these:

Finally.....Im out. Around midnight my right arm is asleep, better turn over. Baby is practicing his punches which annoy me. My neck is throbbing again on the left side. Tylenol anyone? Shall I risk drugging the baby for a little peaceful sleep around here? I try not to. Crap, I have to pee again. 4 am, up to pee again. My mouth is so dry I reach for the water. Lay back down with my back aching and regret my drink as I taste the acid in my mouth. I swear and curse and say to hell with the dentist. I'll take a cavity over having to get up again. Finally I am asleep again. Next thing I know Chance is up and telling us it's 6:30. I doze in and out fully aware that the karate match still apparently hasn't ended. Beep Beep Beep time for Ryan to get up. He hits the snooze 20 times. Chance comes in again from some TV watching to climb all over us and ensure that Ryan is now getting up for work. I decide to try and sleep until Ryan is out of the shower. Even if I don't fall asleep I tell myself, just lay there, you wont be able to do this for much longer. But I can't lay there, my back hurts too bad and I have to pee.

Quote of the Week
Chance is so excited to meet his baby brother. He talks about him every day and is constantly asking us if we have picked a name yet.....it's killing him to know as much as everyone else that keeps hounding us. We're working on it :) Some just move at slower decision making paces than others (ahuuum, Ryan).
Chance told me the other day as he was pulling out a piece of paper to make a chart:
"Mommy, maybe I should make the baby a word chart, and when he learns a word, I'll give him a star. When he fills up his chart with all the stars, then I'll give him part of my allowance. Then I'll tell him not to eat it."

One Last Hurrah Before 3 Becomes 4
Ryan and I decided to bite the bullet and take one last family trip before the baby comes. We headed out by train a week ago Saturday to Serfaus Austria to another KinderHotel, much like the one that we went to over Christmas. The Austrians really know how to do it to keep both parents and children happy. It's too bad that this concept wouldn't work in the US (with all the regulations on child care and liability, I am sure it'd be a legal nightmare). The scenery on the train ride was just amazing, I have never seen a green as vivid as in the alpine country.

The Kinderhotel concept is one that the hotel has a huge, I mean gigantic, staffed kids play room with planned activities running from 8 in the morning to 9 at night. Chance was able to enjoy hikes with the kids, meals, cookouts, magic lessons, painting, and freeplay.
Our little magician came back with all sorts of new tricks up his sleeve.
He also practiced every evening after dinner for the end of the week kids performance. It was funny to see the difference 6 months makes in a child's personality....I thought perhaps I started to see a bit of self consciousness that I haven't seen before. I sure hope he maintains Ryan's personality and doesn't adopt my fear of public speaking and performing.

He loved the kids club and eagerly wanted to go, enabling Ryan and I to have much needed alone time. We didn't know what to do with ourselves, being able to stroll the town in quiet peace, or slooooooooowly hiking up a small hill behind our hotel to enjoy the magnificent views. It was a little torturous being amidst so many striking mountains and knowing I couldn't set off as usual and try to hike them. We were definitely less active on this trip considering I am almost 8 months pregnant, but still I was able to appreciate the views and the crisp mountain air. Ryan got to rent a top of the line mountain bike, and set off 2 of the days to careen down the mountain trails.

Our quirky son is a little obsessed with "healthy" food, so he decided he didn't want to eat dinner in the kids club since it was mostly just sausages and french fries (any normal kid would die for this every night I am sure!). So he'd eat with us quickly off the healthier kids buffet while we were enjoying appetizers, and then he'd head off to the kids club leaving us to savor a 4-coursed meal and then some time on the front balcony after dinner while Ryan drank some beers.
The best part of this trip was that is was perfectly balanced for all of us. It gave Ryan and I alone time to enjoy before the baby comes, and we were also able to do something fun with Chance everyday to soak up our time with him. We will never have that again once the baby arrives.
Ryan discovered a summer funpark up at the top of one of the lifts, and we spent one of our days there with Chance. He was able to innertube down fake snow,

do zip cords, bounce on trampolines

and build water damns.

For lunch we went to the very top of the mountain to a panorama restaurant and overindulged in some magnificent ice cream creations.....I just wanted to make sure I maintained my fantastic round belly and growing behind.

See how happy an ice cream can make a person?

Ryan wanted a Hefeweisen so bad, that when there wasnt one he made history by opting for this.....

Cant see what I am talking about......okay let me zoom in.

And here we are on our way back from a fun day at the fun park.

Now it's back to reality. But the good news is that we've finally moved the computer in to our bedroom and we've assembled the baby bed. It's really getting close to meeting our newest arrival. t minus 9 weeks and counting!

Lots of Goodbyes
Today is a big day for us, a bit emotional as we say goodbye this afternoon to the Hogan family and also today is Chance's last day of Kindergarten. So it will be full of emotions today for Chance as well as he says goodbye to lots of friends at school who are moving on to new countries and new adventures. I guess being at an international school is much like living on an army base, there's tons of coming and going.
I can tell that the baby is coming in the next couple months as I am desperately trying to get all my projects current, the main one being our scrapbook/photo album of our experience here in Switzerland. In doing so, I am just amazed at how little Chance was when we first arrived, just over 2 and a half. Look at the little guy then
It's really hard for me to believe that my little guy is now a 1st grader. Am I old enough to have a first grader? Here he is this morning before school.

So to me, today starts the beginning of the end as we know it here: The Hogan family is moving away tomorrow (Cyndy, Gabriella and Joe) and it marks the beginning of a mass exodus from Zurich that will happen throughout this next year.
We have grown so close to all our friends here, and the group of friends that we have made here are a much tighter group than we have ever had before. We all look out for each other, support each other, we are each other's family since we have none here of our own. We've shared birthday's, Thanksgivings, vacations, and sunny Friday afternoons with these people. It's been such a blessing and now it's strange that for most of us, this year marks the end of our journeys here.
This past month we've had lots of goodbye parties for the Hogans, starting with a fun girls only dinner at a great restaurant Taos.

And then we got to have a family party for the Hogans at Jane's house the other weekend. We finally snapped the photo I've been waiting for to remember us all, here we all our, our family away from home. Unfortunately Jen's husband Mike was out of town and didn't make the photo.

And of course all these goodbyes are making me sentimental of Zurich itself, and so I've started me a list of all the things I need to buy before we move back home. First to be scratched off the list this week was the SBB Mondaine clock. This is the clock that is at every train station, tram stop, basically all over town. My life has been ruled by this clock and the Swiss public transport's punctuality, I thought it fitting to have one now for my own home!

Back from Texas
We've been back from Texas for 2 weeks now and finally have our ducks in order enough to post all the details about our 3 week trip back to Texas. It was so nice being back and seeing much missed family and friends.
This trip for me was that of reflection. It will be my last trip home until we move back at the end of next April and being home made me and Ryan realize that when that time comes, we will definitely be ready to move back and start the next phase of our life's adventure. There's something about being away for a long time, that when you return to the place of your roots, you realize that your culture runs deep in your veins. It's some kind of unexplainable familiarity that I felt when I was home. I could feel my own culture that I couldn't feel when I was living there and hadn't yet experienced living anywhere else. It was nice to be home and in that familiarity again. We are definitely Texas people and will always be most at home there.
We also realized while there that Chance really only knows Switzerland as his home. We were at Zilker Park having snow cones, and he sees a squirrel for the first time and shouts, "Look Mommy, there's a skunk"! And then one day we are driving down the road and he sees a yellow school bus (which he has only seen having one in his hotwheels cars) and says "Mommy, is that a REAL school bus?" It was so cute!
We arrived one week before my brother's wedding, which gave us ample time to get over jet lag, relax and bit and help get things ready for the wedding. We were able to spend a day at Zilker Park, and Chance was able to ride the little train with my mom (which I did as a little girl!).
We had Andrea's mom, sister and her boyfriend over one night for dinner which enabled us to get to know her family a little better before the wedding.

Umpa took us out one day to his brother's lake house so that Chance could go fishing for his first time ever, and he was delighted to catch a bunch of fish.

And then there was the wedding weekend, which was so nice to have all our friends and family in one place. We got to see many of our parents friends that we hadn't seen since our wedding 8 years ago, and it was also nice to have our family all in one place. The rehearsal dinner was a night to remember for sure. Chance had told us all along that he was going to give a toast. He wouldn't disclose what that toast was going to be, which made us a little worried to say the least. I knew somehow that he'd either chicken out, or get up and say something goofy cause he was embarrassed. So right before the well-anticipated moment, the kid informs us that he has not only one toast, but two, and still won't disclose what he is going to say. We knew this was about to be a disaster until....well just watch for yourself. He brought tears to our eyes with his composure, confidence, and unknown speaking abilities. There was a little funny party in the beginning however when he tells this poor mom trying to sooth her fussy baby to sit down! Sorry, I took the video with the camera turned to the side, forgetting that you can rotate video on the computer - just cock your head!
The wedding itself was gorgeous, on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Travis. It rained a little during the ceremony, but it made it memorable nonetheless and Andrea and Drew's happy spirit didn't let a little rain get in the way! My boys looked so cute in their tuxes!

The week following we went up to Dallas to spend our time with the Baganz family. Ryan's brother's family all came in from Florida, and so all 3 of Ryan's sibblings were in one place. Ryan hadn't been back home since X-mas 07 which was a long time! The last day we hired a photographer to take an updated family portrait since we had all the Baganz family in one place at one time.

The boys got to do lots of fun things like race car driving and fishing again, and as usual we ate our way thru restaurants and lots of hefty evening family meals.

Chance was in heaven when all the cousins brought their nintendo DS's so that they could play eachother in Mario Kart.

So returning back to Zurich has made me start the final phase of this journey. I'm definitely slowing down towards the end of this pregnancy, which will make summer long and hard having to keep an active boy entertained. Hopefully we can enjoy our last summer here. I've gotta say, I do love the cooler summer weather. Texas in May was already just too hot for us. We'll need to work on changing our blood back to tolerate such extreme heat before we move back!
We've uploaded the pics from Texas into 3 sections (in the right hand column)....time with my dad, time in Austin and at the wedding, and time in Dallas. The actual wedding pictures can be seen on the photographer's website under "recent weddings....Andrea & Drew".

CAUSE FOR MASSIVE CELEBRATION

Today is BIG. We've had this little thing for over 8 years, nagging at us monthly for money, called a student loan. And today, YES, IT IS TOTALLY PAID OFF. It feld so good to hit that little button on my bank's Bill Pay. Good riddance. I now can afford to pay for diapers. Ryan, you're education has officially been paid for!

Relating
I've kept a link to this blog site that my friend turned me on to awhile back. I don't know the lady that keeps this blog but I really like her writing style although it's not for the weak or highly sensitive I've gotta warn you. I mention this cause she's also pregnant, about 10 weeks ahead of me, and I am really relating to her at this point in the pregnancy. Everything she mentions seems already to be me...the bad part is that she is 34 weeks along and I am ONLY ALMOST 24 weeks along and falling apart to the point that I feel 34 weeks along and sadly look it too. How many more days of this do I have to endure? 119 I think. I think I can, I think I can. Please can this baby be just a little early?
